Historic Yates Mill County Park

For an afternoon of exploration, head to the park's scenic 174-acre mill. The park's centerpiece, the historic Yates Mill, is the last water-powered gristmill in the county. In its heyday, the Wake County area had over seventy water mills. NC State University purchased the mill in 1963 and placed it on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. You can also tour the historic house of Dr. Manassa Thomas Pope, a prominent African-American citizen of Raleigh. The museum is open to the public and has a 30-minute tour that features exhibits and documents.
